Also I have learned (deffinitly in island 4 and 5) To just always take the baker lady (the baker hermit) with you. And even though it always scares the ♥♥♥♥ out of me, I've always been able to run past them and get stuff or even peasants from behind the portals when they are shut off. I haven't tested it yet, but can I even recruit from behind a portal? It's a very long way before I get back to my walls and so the peasants might not even ever make it.
